Boat Care
The fleet of Elliott 6 boats that we have here at HSS are used by a wide variety of different people. Everyone who uses the boats MUST contribute to the maintenance. This means that you have to take special care to make sure that when you finish sailing, the boats are left in EXACTLY the same condition you left them in. To do that, when you get to the boats, please take the time to HAVE A LOOK at how everything is secured, tied and positioned. Below is a list of some guidelines but the majority of it is common sense:
· Booking Before sailing an Elliott 6, the session must be booked on the online booking system. If you have not booked a boat, you are not allowed to sail. It is as simple as that.
· Fenders Each boat has 2 fenders. 1 long fender and 1 round fender. The long fender is put on the side of the boat that is next to the mooring boom. The string goes through the traveller fairlead and into the mainsheet cleat. The round fender is put on the side of the boat that is directly next to another boat. It gets tied onto one of the 3 control rope fairleads.
· When you go sailing, take the fenders off AFTER you start sailing and store them INSIDE the boat. DOWN THE HATCH. That way, the fenders stay with their boats.
· Mooring When you are tying the boats up, the rope tied to the dock goes through the bow and gets a figure of 8 knot. NOT A BOWLINE and NOT HALF HITCHES. Only AFTER the bow is secured do you tie the stern. The stern line goes through the small black fairlead then tied to the strongpoint in the centre of the floor behind the traveller. This must be tied as tight as possible, and HALF HITCHES are to be used.
· Unrigging The boom is left hoisted via the main halyard. The traveller must be cleated in the centre and the mainsheet must be TIGHTENED and CLEATED. Do NOT tie a knot in the mainsheet.
· The red AUDI banners MUST be hoisted along the forestay via the jib halyard.
· The banners have a piece of string tied to the bottom. There is a loop on the other end, this loop is to be shackled to the deck. Do NOT shackle the banner itself to the deck.
· The spinnaker halyard must be tied to the ring on the front of the mast with at BOWLINE and then pulled TIGHT. Do NOT pull tight until it is tied to the mast
· The spinnaker pole TOPPING LIFT must be untied from the spinnaker poles BEFORE lowering the mainsail. It is not long enough and it will hold the boom off the deck. Tie the topper to the ring on the front of the mast with a BOWLINE and then pull TIGHT.
· Any ropes left on the boat must be left tight and secure. Especially halyards. When a halyard is loose, it flaps against the mast, damaging the mast, ropes and putting unnecessary jerking loads on the fittings.
· When you leave the boats, please take off all rubbish with you and put it in the bin. Any tape on ropes must be removed.
· Damage After EVERY sailing session, a Damage Form MUST be filled in. Even if there is NO damage, a form must be filled in. All fields of the form MUST be completed, so be sure to remember which boat, jib, main and spinnaker you used. If there is damage, please write about it clearly and in detail. Damage forms are kept in the race office. If you cannot find them, ask Ollie. If Ollie is not there, call him and ask. If there are no forms, you can download one from the HSS Match Race Center website. Download, print, fill out then either scan and email it in or fax it in.
· The Damage Form is a CRITICAL part of sailing the Elliott 6’s. You must take it seriously and fill them out every time.
· If there is serious damage, call Ollie immediately. Serious damage is anything that will prevent the boat being sailed. For example, a broken spinnaker pole, a broken mainsheet etc. These things are serious enough to stop the boat from sailing. Ollie MUST be called and told as soon as you come off the water.
· The Damage Forms are also a way of you notifying us of wear and tear on the boats. If a cleat is not working very well or a rope looks like it will break soon, write it on the form so it can be fixed.
